History and Geography

In both History and Geography students are given the opportunity to develop their skills in research, reading, writing, viewing and information technology. Students are encouraged to work on their personal organisation through independent and collaborative learning.


The Australian Curriculum in History focuses on specific content for each year group. This content provides opportunities to develop historical understanding and historical skills.

Year 7 Content Focus - THE ANCIENT WORLD

Students investigate ancient societies and select Depth Studies from the following ancient civilizations:  Egypt, China, Rome, Greece and India.


Students investigate how and why societies evolved over this time.

Depth Studies include: the Vikings, Renaissance Italy, Medieval Europe, the Ottoman empire, Shogunate Japan, the Mongol expansion, the discovery of the Americas, the Black Death.

Year 9 Content Focus - THE MAKING OF THE MODERN WORLD from 1750-1918

Students investigate how new ideas and technological development contributed to change in this time.

Depth Studies include:  the Industrial Revolution, the Movement of people (slaves, convicts, settlers), imperialism, nationalism, World War I.

Year 10 Content Focus - THE MODERN WORLD and AUSTRALIA

Students investigate Australia's role globally in the aftermath of World War I to the present day.

Depth Studies include: World War II, rights and freedom, popular culture, the environment movement, migration.



Geography covers a wide range of content which allows students to develop a sense of wonder, curiosity, knowledge and interest about the environments, peoples, cultures and places of the world.

It enables students to gain an understanding of geographical thinking and encourages students to ask geographical questions, plan an inquiry, collect and analyse information, communicate their findings and use geographical skills to research, interpret information, communicate(verbally and in writing)and to be able to problem-solve.

In Year 7 and Year 8 students are grouped in mixed ability classes. In Years 9 and 10 students are streamed into two levels, Advanced and Core, based on their academic achievement in Years 7 and 8 and on recommendation from teachers. It is possible for students to move between these streams where appropriate over the course of the two years.

Years 7 and 8

Course Content includes:  the environment, water, natural disasters, sustainability, Asia, World Geography, Antarctica.

Year 9 and 10

Course Content includes:  global issues; Asian studies, its impact on the environment, urban geography, politics and power, civics and citizenship, the world of work, financial literacy.
